US hiring surpassed all estimates in May, with employers adding 172,000 nonfarm payrolls, offering the clearest sign yet that the labour market may be breaking out of a prolonged period of lacklustre hiring.
But a disconnect showed. Workforce reductions are at historic lows, yet consumer employment sentiment has softened, and small enterprises are actively curbing headcount expansion.
The economy still faces potential headwinds in the months to come, especially if the ongoing war drags on and the Strait of Hormuz remains mostly shuttered, keeping oil prices elevated.
