The US economy added 57,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in June, falling well short of economists' expectations. Prior reports for April and May faced significant downward revisions.
Employment growth is being sustained by record-low layoffs rather than active hiring. Economists note that recruitment remains suppressed by consecutive headwinds: last year's tariffs followed by the recent war.
Q2 payroll gains averaged 111,000 a month, far ahead of last year’s 34,000 average. The labour force has declined in four of the last six months, reflecting tough immigration crackdown.
