US nonfarm payrolls unexpectedly dropped by 92,000 in February, far worse than expected. That marked a weak labour market after January's downwardly revised increase of 126,000 jobs.
Economists saw further downside risks to the hiring activity from a prolonged war in the Middle East, which has dampened investor confidence and caused stock market volatility.
In the 12 months through February, wages increased 3.8%. The solid gain will likely help underpin consumer spending, though rising gasoline prices pose a challenge to price stability.
