Nonfarm payroll growth was slower than expected in July with June and May totals revised sharply lower, raising potential trouble signs for the US labour market as Trump ramps up tariffs.
At the same time, the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, in line with the forecast and average weeks unemployed jumped to 24.1, the highest level since April 2022.
Federal government employment continued to decline, down 12,000 for the month and 84,000 since its January peak, before DOGE began paring down the jobs rolls.
