The moderation of June's inflation rate to 3.5% was largely due to a transient decline in energy prices, which fell after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to resolve the ongoing war.
While other cost categories experienced downward pressure, food prices escalated over the month. The BLS report highlighted that "four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased in June."
The core inflation reading exhibited zero monthly growth, which serves as a concerning indicator of structural price stickiness outside of energy costs. Notably the report does not reflect a renewed spike in energy prices.
