Progress in the fight to throttle back inflation stalled in December amid price pressures from groceries, dining out, utility gas, clothing and other categories of consumer spending.
Consumer spending held up fairly well last year and is set to remain solid in 2026, supported by easier financial conditions, higher tax refunds and lower taxes, and resilient labour market.
Adding to reflation concerns, crude oil prices crossed $100 barrel, after major Middle East producers cut output because the critical Strait of Hormuz remains closed due to the Iran war.
