Leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs accounted for as much as half of all new U.S. ETF launches in June 2026, according to Reuters. These funds focus on one company but can use leverage, inverse exposure or options to produce returns that differ sharply from simply owning the stock.

The launch pace accelerated sharply in 2026. Reuters reported that leveraged and inverse single-stock products accounted for as much as half of all new ETF launches in June. It also reported that 63 leveraged single-stock funds had already closed in the U.S. in 2026, compared with three in 2025.
That combination captures the current market. Issuers are still launching products rapidly, but the growing number of closures suggests demand is concentrated in a smaller group of successful funds.
One of the most important words in a leveraged single-stock ETF’s objective is daily. A 2x daily ETF generally seeks twice the stock’s return for one trading day. It does not promise twice the stock’s cumulative return over a week, month or year.
Suppose a stock starts at $100. It rises 10% on Day 1 to $110, then falls 10% on Day 2 to $99. After two days, the stock is down 1%.
Now take a hypothetical 2x daily ETF that also starts at $100. A 20% gain on Day 1 takes it to $120. A 20% loss on Day 2 reduces it to $96.
The stock is down 1%, but the hypothetical ETF is down 4%. The reason is compounding. Each day’s percentage move starts from a new base, so the order and size of gains and losses affect the final result. This is known as path dependency.
FINRA notes that most geared exchange-traded products reset daily and that performance over longer periods can differ significantly from the stated daily multiple, especially when the underlying asset is volatile.
The key point is simple: a daily target is not a promise of the same multiple over a longer holding period.
Concentration is the first risk. A broad ETF can spread company-specific risk across many holdings; a single-stock ETF cannot. Earnings, regulation, product news or another company-specific event can dominate the fund’s return.
Leveraged and inverse structures can amplify losses, while volatile back-and-forth price moves can produce unfavourable compounding over time. The SEC has warned that leveraged single-stock ETFs can expose holders to greater volatility and risk than owning the underlying shares.
Product structure adds other risks. Smaller funds may trade with lower volume and wider bid-ask spreads. Swaps can introduce counterparty exposure, while options-based strategies can cap some upside. Management fees and trading costs also reduce returns.
