The US economy added an estimated 50,000 jobs in December, slowing from a downwardly revised 56,000 jobs added in November. Still, the unemployment rate edged lower to 4.4% from a revised 4.5%.

That marked a sluggish end to what was one of the weakest years of job growth in decades. The economy is experiencing a jobless expansion, with growth and worker productivity surging in Q3.

Economists have blamed sluggish job growth on Trump's aggressive trade and immigration policies, which they say have reduced both demand for and supply of workers.
