An index CFD tracks a market benchmark such as the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100, while an ETF CFD tracks the traded price of an exchange-traded fund such as SPY or QQQ. Both are leveraged derivative contracts, but the underlying instrument differs. That difference can affect pricing, trading hours, dividends, costs and how closely the CFD follows the broader market.

Index CFDs provide exposure to benchmarks, while ETF CFDs can also target more specialised baskets such as sectors, themes, bonds or countries.

An important point is that an index CFD is not automatically more diversified than an ETF CFD. An ETF such as SPY also represents hundreds of companies.

An S&P 500 index CFD and a SPY ETF CFD are both closely connected to the same U.S. stock market benchmark, but they are not identical contracts.
SPY aims to follow the S&P 500, but an ETF’s return can differ slightly from its benchmark because of fund expenses, portfolio management and tracking differences.
ETF shares also trade on an exchange, so their market price can move slightly above or below the value of their underlying holdings. Market-making and creation and redemption mechanisms generally keep these differences relatively small.
CFDs add their own trading conditions, including spreads, financing, and execution. An ETF CFD and a comparable index CFD can therefore move very closely together without matching point for point.
Beyond what each CFD references, several practical differences can affect how you trade the instruments.
Major index CFDs often have extended trading sessions because liquid index futures markets outside the main stock exchange session can support pricing.
ETF CFDs generally trade closer to the underlying ETF's exchange hours. This is important when markets react to economic releases, geopolitical events, or other news outside regular equity trading hours.
An index CFD may already be trading while an ETF CFD remains closed. When the ETF market opens, part of that move may appear as an opening gap.
Both index CFDs and ETF CFDs can involve spreads, overnight financing and, depending on the provider, commissions.
An ETF also has its own expense ratio, which affects the fund’s performance over time. CFD traders generally aren't charged that expense ratio separately, but the underlying ETF’s expenses still affect its price and returns.
Actual CFD costs depend on the specific contract, including its spread, financing rate, commission structure and holding period.
Dividend adjustments can also differ between the two. For an index CFD, adjustments may reflect dividends paid by companies included in the underlying index. For an ETF CFD, the relevant adjustment may arise when the underlying ETF makes a distribution.
In either case, receiving or paying a dividend adjustment does not give the CFD trader ownership of the underlying shares or ETF units.
Index CFDs and ETF CFDs may use different margin requirements, leverage limits and contract sizes.
This means one lot of an index CFD should not be assumed to represent the same market exposure as one lot of an ETF CFD.
Before opening a position, check the contract specification to understand the notional exposure, margin requirement, and trading conditions.
The better choice depends on the exposure you want.
An index CFD may be a more direct fit when the view concerns a broad benchmark.

U.S. large-cap stocks may rise.
The Nasdaq-100 may weaken after an interest-rate decision.
Small-cap stocks may outperform large-cap stocks.
In each case, an established index already represents the market view.
An ETF CFD can be useful when you want exposure to a particular fund or narrower market segment.

Semiconductor companies may outperform the broader technology market.
Energy shares may benefit from higher oil prices.
Long-duration government bonds may rise if yields fall.
Emerging-market equities may outperform developed markets.
ETFs can package these narrower exposures into tradable baskets when no equivalent headline index CFD is available.
