Consumer prices increased slightly less than expected in September as a surge in the cost of gasoline was partially offset by a sharp moderation in rents, which lead to a rate cut at Fed's last meeting.
Economists estimated consumers so far have absorbed about 20% of the import duties. They noted businesses refrained from passing on the full costs of tariffs to consumers at the expense of hiring.
Even if overall inflation slows next year, Trump will still face political headwinds over the cost of living with home mortgage rates expected to remain comparatively high and tariff-related price increases persisting.
