Inflation closed out 2024 on a strong note, the Commerce Department reported. Core PCE registered a 2.8% reading, meeting expectations and the same as the prior month.
It was the 46th consecutive month above 2.5% for the gauge. Strong consumer spending suggests that the Fed could delay cutting interest rates for some time this year.
However, economists generally expect it to continue falling in the months ahead, though sticky services prices could still exert upward pressure on the index.
