Underlying inflation increased more than expected in December, and signs are pointing to a further acceleration in January, which would strengthen expectations of Fed's inaction.
That marked the highest level since April 2024 as tariffs kept goods inflation alive. Prices of core services excluding shelter--such as electricity prices--are adding more than usual to core inflation.
S&P Global Ratings Economics believes that the rising risk of an energy shock stemming from the war in the Middle East opens the door to a much wider range of possible outcomes with higher inflation.
