ADP data showed that private-sector employers added just 44,000 jobs in July, the weakest reading since January, and the labour market has now been cooling for several months.

As the August ADP report is released, Federal Reserve policy is drawing growing attention. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is contending with pressure to cut rates, inflation concerns that have yet to subside, and divisions within the FOMC all at once.

Markets expect the August ADP report to show 48,000 jobs added, only a modest pick-up from July and well short of the reading needed to secure a Fed rate hike in September. Unless the final figure comes in far above consensus, the August data will not show any marked improvement in employment growth.
