How is pip value calculated?

When your account currency is different from the quote currency of the instrument you trade (for example, JPY in GBP/JPY), the pip value will fluctuate with the cross exchange rate and must be converted to get the accurate profit or loss.

Assume your account currency is USD and you trade 100,000 units (1 standard lot) of GBP/JPY. The current USD/JPY exchange rate is 159.653. For most non-JPY currency pairs, 1 standard pip is usually 0.0001; for JPY pairs, 1 standard pip is usually 0.01. GBP/JPY is used as the example below.

Step 1: Calculate the base pip value (settled in the quote currency JPY);
For currency pairs involving JPY, 1 standard pip = 0.01;
Contract size × 0.01 = Base pip value;
100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 JPY

Step 2: Convert it into the account currency (USD);
Base pip value ÷ USD/JPY exchange rate = Actual pip value;
1,000 JPY ÷ 159.653 ≈ 6.26 USD

Conclusion: By using the Pip Value Calculator, you can calculate that when trading 100,000 units of GBP/JPY, each 1 pip movement results in an actual profit or loss of about USD 6.26 in your account.
